Happy July 4th with a tribute to American astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt (July 4, 1868 - December 12, 1921) for her 150th birthday. Via her studies of thousands of variable stars in Magellanic Clouds, she discovered the relation between the luminosity and the period of Cepheid variable stars, enabled astronomers to measure the distance between the Earth and faraway galaxies.
